Children Spread Too Thick – A World-Class Sandwich Problem It is with great relief that I read the CEO’s reassuring words that the children at Hagvidson’s preschools are not starving – they’re just spreading butter a bit too enthusiastically. We’re told that a whole centimeter layer of Bregott has caused concern in management. Not for the children’s health, of course, but because “more than usual is being used right now.” After all, they want to keep Bregott. It is a luxury item these days. It’s comforting to know this isn’t about budget cuts, but about pedagogy. That the children are to learn responsibility, cooperation, and self-discipline – by not taking too much butter. It’s almost touching. One can imagine the next step being that the children weigh their sandwiches before eating them, as an exercise in household economics. And while the children learn not to be greedy with toppings, the CEO and her colleagues are pocketing millions. But that’s surely just a pedagogical exercise in entrepreneurship. You have to show the children how to create value – by taking from the small and giving to the big. The whole thing is reminiscent of Holodomor, that little historical event where power used food as a tool of control. The difference, of course, is that Hagvidson has no fields to confiscate – only sandwiches to monitor. But the principle is the same: control access, call it care, and deny everything when people start asking questions. So next time your child comes home and says there wasn’t enough topping, don’t worry. It’s not starvation. It’s learning. And the CEO has said everything is fine – which is exactly what people say when it’s not.
