I had an incredible three weeks in Uppsala with the UISS programme! What I loved most is the completeness of the programme. You do not just learn the language, but you also get immersed in Swedish culture through cultural lessons and many excursions and evening activities. The programme is designed in a way that you really get to know the other people and feel at home immediately. The lessons were quite intensive with a lot of homework, but I also heard that this is depended on the teacher, so this will not always be the case. The housing was decent and right in the city centre which was very convenient.
The staff—especially the program assistants—are what make UISS truly one of a kind. They organize Friday excursions and social evenings, handle countless responsibilities throughout the day, and still frequently choose to spend their free time talking, laughing, and connecting with students at the nations or around the school. By the end of my nine weeks in Uppsala, I had gotten to know several of the assistants well enough to sincerely call them personal friends.
Although supervising students and attending certain activities are parts of their jobs, the assistants I came to know went far beyond their formal responsibilities. They invested genuine personal time and effort into building friendships with us and making us feel welcome. One assistant is even still wearing the Lapland group burn bracelet that many of us received to commemorate what was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The assistants are not simply employees—they are warm, engaging people who will laugh with you, spend time with you, and even teach you some Swedish over fika or during an evening at a nation. Their kindness and dedication shaped my experience more than I can adequately express.
That warmth reflects the UISS program as a whole. Its staff, students, and the city of Uppsala create an environment unlike any other. As long as you arrive willing to be kind, welcoming, and open to new experiences, much of what you gain from the program is up to you. You will be surrounded by people of many different cultures, ages, personalities, talents, and perspectives, most of whom are eager to share their experiences with you and create new ones over the duration of the program!
10/10 summer experience
I have been 7 times to UISS and never once disappointed with the courses, the teachers, or the staff...if your goal is to learn Swedish, or improve your skills, UISS provides an excellent yet intensive opportunity to do so. It combines language education with cultural experiences that truly enhance every part of the program during a 3, 6, or 9 week summer session. I enjoy UISS so much that I am already planning my 8th time in Uppsala in 2027.
I first heard about UISS from a coursemate in my Swedish class at home, who attended a few years ago. Ever since, I had the program on my travel wish list and it was the best decision to just do it this summer, because I just had the best three weeks I could have ever imagined.
I was quite nervous going to Uppsala on my own and participating in language and culture classes without knowing anyone, especially because I was not sure if I would be able to keep up with my assigned Swedish class. My worries, however, were completely unfounded. Mathias did a brilliant job of teaching our A2.2 group and was very good at encouraging us to try speaking Swedish more and more, without anyone feeling uncomfortable. Apart from the language lessons in the morning, I cannot recommend David’s afternoon class enough, where he taught us everything you need to know about the Swedish identity, culture and public administration system.
What I will take away most from UISS, however, are the friendships I’ve made with people from all over the world. We’ve spent so much time together in the dorms, in our classes and during all sorts of shared activities - such as trips to Stockholm, swimming in the lakes, hanging out in cafés and student pubs etc. - outside of our normal normal lives, that we’ve gotten to know one another in a very unique way.
Therefore, I was really sad as the farewell dinner came closer at the end of the three weeks, and I wished I’d had the chance to stay longer. Luckily, the first reunions with new friends are already planned and I hope to be able to return next year! I can sincerely recommend taking part in UISS to anyone who wants to make significant progress with their language skills and is up for a fantastic international experience.
Genoten van 3 weekse zomercursus in Uppsala. Ik had gekozen voor de taallessen in de ochtend, maar hoorde veel positieve berichten over de middagcursussen. Bont gezelschap van over de hele wereld en verschillende leeftijden. Leuke uitstapjes gehad met Midsommar en naar Stockholm. Fijn en enthousiast personeel. Zeker aan te bevelen voor mensen die een zomercursus Zweeds willen volgen en genieten van Uppsala en omgeving.

UISS really helped increase my comfort level communicating in Swedish after having lived here as an exchange student when I was in high school. I enjoyed the combination of having formal language instruction in the morning and learning about the great Swedish writers in the afternoon.

This course gives you a real connection to Swedish culture, not just language skills. I gained speaking confidence very quickly, thanks in part to the fun, unique classes like drama. The community is so open and welcoming; the fika breaks with people from around the world are the best! The teachers make learning enjoyable and easy to follow. A truly amazing experience!
UISS has primarily been a journey of experience and friendship for me.
I met some wonderful people I’ll never forget and that I’ll carry with me forever.
With them I went through six incredibly intense weeks, during which I learned so much about the Swedish language and culture.
The morning classes were immersive and never boring, thanks to the creative and varied teaching methods every teacher has, such as singing, chatting with other classes, city tours, and more.
With them I explored Swedish culture through engaging afternoon classes.
They cover topics like drama, music, art, pop culture, and welfare, are so interesting that it’s a pity having to choose just one per session. Even though they're not focused on grammar, they still help improve your language skills in natural, practical ways.
With them I experienced much more than a school.
We celebrated Midsommar, partied at the Nations, tasted food from all around the world, sang in every corner of the school and the city, enjoyed countless fika breaks, visited cities and museums, and took buses, ferries, and even cruise ships!
All of this was possible thanks to UISS and its passionate community.
I can never thank you all enough. See you next summer!
Coming to UISS I was not sure what to expect. I had been to a summer school abroad before. Still, I was excited and nervous at the same time.
From the very first lesson, I felt truly welcomed by our teacher Sofia. Our B2.1 class was moving fast, but she made it so much fun. We started the day with singing, discussed philosophical questions, took on different roles, practiced pronunciation with a poem and more. During the entire course Sofia challenged us to bring out our best Swedish. This really helped me take a big step forward in my spoken and especially written Swedish.
In the afternoon I took part in “Kultur och samhällsliv” with David where we explored Uppsala by foot. We visited museums, libraries, churches, and learned about Swedish culture, history, architecture, music, film and literature. The course was surprisingly diverse. David made every afternoon entertaining, and he is one of the best storytellers I have met. Huge recommendation!
But probably the best thing was all the friends I made from all over the world. We had so much fun playing cards, singing karaoke, discovering the city, or having long late-night talks.
They say UISS is like a family and I have to agree. As I write this, so many moments come to mind, like a spontaneous fika we had with our teacher David in a cozy café. From the students and teachers to the awesome assistants Elenor, Edvin, David, Kasper and Leon, all the way to Nelleke, you can have a great time with everyone. The atmosphere is wonderfully informal, and typically Swedish in that sense.
These three weeks went by way too fast, and they already have a very special place in my heart. I’m determined to return if I get the chance. Likewise I encourage you to join UISS if you want to improve your Swedish, try new activities and spend an unforgettable summer!
I agree with the negative reviews of the Uppsala Summer Session—I would give it zero stars if I could. I attended the summer session in 1986, and I can honestly say it was a complete waste of money.
To begin with, one of the program administrators, Nelleke, was a curt, rude, unfriendly "human being". I have never hit a woman before, but she came very close. I lost a significant portion of my deposit because, apparently, other students failed to keep their rooms in order and made long-distance phone calls to their respective countries. Withholding my deposit for this would have been a criminal offense in my country, potentially landing her in prison.
The food they served us at lunch—if you can even call it food—was absolute tasteless trash. The overall attitude of the program was parochial and condescending toward participants. News flash: I was paying to be there, not the other way around.
Many years later, I stumbled across a website for the summer session and saw that Nelleke had posted pictures of her ugly face on it. I wrote her a letter suggesting that she remove her photos from the site, as this might help attract more victims—or should I say participants. I also noticed that her husband, Jan, was no longer associated with the summer session. I wondered if he had finally divorced her but apparently, he had passed away. I couldn’t help but wonder if he engineered this to get away from her.
In response, I received an exceptionally angry email from Nelleke, in which she called me every name in the book. I wasn’t surprised—people who can dish it out usually can’t take it. In fact, she even wrote me another message after the first, listing additional insults she had forgotten to include. This told me one thing: I had hit a nerve. She was just as much of a miserable excuse of a "human being" as I had always thought.
If you want to go to Sweden to mingle with the people and study there, I strongly suggest doing so through an accredited university with an exchange program. The Uppsala Summer Session was a second- or perhaps third-rate option for people who didn’t have a university to participate through. When I think about how hard I worked to save the money I wasted on this program, it makes me sick.
My final piece of advice: Do not go.
