The Dominican monastery Sancta Maria Magdalena was a cloister with beggar monks, belonging to the Dominican order. They were living on gifts and baksheesh, due to an ideal of godliness and to follow Jesus Christ and his hardship. The cloister, which is more known as the Black brothers cloister, since the monks were wearing a black coat and cowl, was established in 1221. The cloister was given some land east of the Dome by the archbishop Anders Sunesen. He is now buried in a sarcophagus in the batiste chapel in the Dome of Lund. Two men, Simeon and Nicolaus were earlier sent to Sigtuna, but they were not permitted to establish a cloister there. Instead, they were sent to Lund were they, together with ten more monks, established the first Dominican cloister in the northern countries, and Simeon became its first prior. Maria Magdalena was the patron saint of the cloister, and the cloister church was sanctified to Virgin Mary. Just after the Danish reformation in 1536, the cloister was dissolved and the buildings were raised. Parts of the cloister church were examined during archaeological excavations 1903 and 1030, but the archaeologists thought they have found the church of Saint Michel. In 1940 the intendant of Kulturen, Ragnar Blomqvist identified the remnants as the Dominican monastery. In 1947, Dominicans returned to Lund, and nowadays they have a small cloister at Sandgatan.
