We had an amazing birthday evening at Smugglaren. We chose the 7-course tasting menu with wine pairing, and the whole experience was creative, playful and full of flavour.
There were so many interesting combinations and little explosions of taste throughout the menu. We especially loved the artichoke soup, the tacos with Karljohanssvamp, the deer dish, the crisp knäck served with cheese, and the cheesecake was an absolutely perfect ending.
What made the evening even more special was our waiter. He was genuinely funny, warm and entertaining, and gave us great explanations of both the food and the wines in both Swedish and English. His sense of humour really added to the evening and made our birthday dinner feel very special.
The interior is also full of character, with stuffed animals, warm details and a very cosy atmosphere. Very relaxed in a special way.
We enjoyed every course, laughed a lot and left very happy and definitely not hungry 😄
A wonderfully creative dining experience and definitely a place we would happily return to.

Tråkig men utan bekräftelse finns ingen bokning och det gäller nog på de flesta ställen, tyvärr. Ni gästade oss aldrig kvällen 11/9 ni åt inte vår mat, men ändå recenserar ni oss som om ni har gjort det. Bedrövligt.

Fabulous birthday dinner here. We had booked for four at the end of the season, but it was still busy enough that they had to turn people away so that staff and kitchen could still manage the bookings they had. I'd rather this way of managing capacity, but I would recommend booking in advance if you're keen on visiting! Fun drinks list, described as good, very good, the best. We had some cocktails to start before moving onto wine and beer. The waiter did very well managing a large group, our table and a few couples dining that evening - nothing felt too rushed or too slow. The food itself was wonderful, really great flavours. Fresh ingredients, and a nod to Swedish dishes. A great place for a visit to Västervik.

i had a really enjoyable experience at Restaurang Smugglaren in Västervik. From the moment you arrive, the restaurant has a lovely intimate and rustic feel, with charming surroundings that create a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
The food was undoubtedly the highlight. There is a strong focus on quality Swedish ingredients, with plenty of local produce and flavours inspired by the surrounding region and the Västervik archipelago. The dishes are beautifully presented, combining traditional ingredients with a modern approach to cooking.
The tasting menu is particularly impressive, offering a succession of carefully prepared courses, each with its own flavours and character. It is clear that a great deal of thought goes into both the preparation and presentation of the food.
The service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. The smaller, intimate setting also gives the restaurant a personal feel that you don't always find in larger establishments.
