The Royal Dramatic Theatre (Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern), also known as Dramaten, is located in Stockholm, Sweden. The theatre is situated in a public square called Nybroplan, facing the Nybroviken waterfront in central Stockholm, since 1908. Sweden's national stage for 'spoken drama', was founded in 1788. About a thousand annual shows are put on the theatre's five running stages. The theatre was built by the architect Fredrik Lilljekvist. The theatre's acting school, the Royal Dramatic Training Academy, produced many actors and directors who would go on to be famous. The school was split off as a separate institution in 1967. From the 1880s the national stage had suffered stiff competition from several new private theatres in Stockholm. The subject of refurbishing the national stage at Kungstrad garden took place. The decision was soon made to completely tear down the old theatre building and to build a new, bigger, fresher and more modern one at a more suitable location. In 1881, the Royal Dramatic Theatre, which had until then been financed by the royal court was separated from the court and the royal family and made a state theatre, which was completed in 1888. The new location that was eventually picked out for the new Royal Dramatic Theatre Nybroplan, was closer to the new heart of Stockholm and was beautifully situated by the waterfront. Fredrik Lilljekvist was appointed the head architect, and in 1908, the national stage's new theatre building at Nybroplan opened with Strindberg's new play Master Olof. This building is the present Royal Dramatic Theatre. Dramaten currently houses these stages - Stora scenen – the main stage, since 1908 having 720 seats) Lilla scenen – the second stage, since 1945, re-opened in 2000 with 340 seats. Malarsalen - since 1971, a former painting studio for theatrical scenery with 160 seats. Tornrummet – the small, intimate stage, used by the old Royal Dramatic Theare's acting school with 60 seats. Lejonkulan – Young Dramaten's regular stage for school plays. Elverket - since 1997, has served as a flexible annex stage, located at Linnegatan 69. Originally was a power station designed and it was transformed into a theater venue. In 2021, a collaboration with Dansens hus turned it into an experimental stage for modern dance and theater. The building is a notable example of Art Nouveau and Neo-Baroque architecture, known for its pale stone facade, rich sculptural reliefs, and gold accents. Since 1909, it has served as Sweden's national stage for dramatic arts. An extremely attractive looking place, with a glint that catches the eye, of the passers-by. Saw it on my tour with TC during 2025.
