In the southern part of Kungsträdgården stands the bronze statue of Charles XII (Karl XII), one of Sweden’s most famous and most debated kings. The statue was created by the sculptor Johan Peter Molin and unveiled on 30 November 1868 — the 150th anniversary of the king’s death. It was paid for by public subscription. Charles is shown standing, bare-headed, with a sword in his right hand and his left arm pointing eastward. The pose is simple and determined, reflecting the 19th-century image of him as a warrior king who never gave up. The historical figure: Charles XII (1682–1718) became king at the age of fifteen and spent almost his entire reign at war. He won spectacular early victories against Denmark, Poland and Russia, but the long campaign against Peter the Great ended in disaster after the Battle of Poltava in 1709. He spent years in exile in the Ottoman Empire before returning to Sweden, only to be killed in 1718 during the siege of Fredriksten in Norway. To some he remains the brave young warrior who defended Sweden’s great-power status; to others he is the king whose endless wars exhausted the country and helped end Sweden’s age as a major European power. The controversy: The statue has never been neutral. In the late 20th century it became a gathering point for nationalist on the anniversary of the king’s death, which in turn provoked counter-demonstrations. This history still colours how many Swedes see both the monument and the man. Charles XII is admired by some as a symbol of determination and national strength, and criticised by others as a representative of militarism and a costly, ultimately failed imperial ambition. The statue itself is well executed and occupies a prominent place in one of Stockholm’s most central parks. Whether you see it as a tribute to a complex historical figure or as a reminder of Sweden’s contested past, it remains one of the city’s most loaded public monuments. A short stop that opens a long conversation about Swedish history.
