The Franciscan cloister Sancta Catharina, also known as the Grey Brother’s monastery, was a cloister designated to beggar monks whit in the Franciscans order. They lived from charity and donations, due to a sanctity ideal, aiming at follow Jesus Christ through hardship. Opposite monks living in a monastery, the beggar monks were not allocated to a specific cloister, therefore their cloisters were called conventions. They were commonly known as Grey Brothers, while their clothing was in grey color. The order was established in 1238, actively supported by Uffe Thrugotsen, archbishop in Lund. The cloister building was made of tile, and was finished in the 1270th. In 1425, it was decided upon a Studium Generale, which later was known as university, was to be established in the cloister. After six years studies, you could achieve an exam called Magister Atrium. To become PhD of Theology there was needed to study 15 more years. The teaching started in 1438, and during the next 40 years it was the only education teaching at an academic level in the Nordic countries, until Uppsala university then was established in 1477. In autumn 1972, an archaeological excavation was made in the cloister church chancel, the grave of the contestable archbishop Jacob Erlandsen. The grave tomb and a copy of his cranium can know be seen in the cellar of the Dean house at the Cultural Outdoor Museum Kulturen. The remnants were reburied in the chapel of the Seven-armed chapel in the Lund Cathedral. The archbishop died at Rügen the 18th February 1274, when he was travelling back from visiting the Pope in Rome. A disputed hypothesis tells that he was secrecy murdered by an arrow from an arbalest, directed from the Danish king Erik Glipping. Looking at the cranium, you can find out by yourself if the hole at the temple is made by an arrow or not. The south side of the cloister was almost in the middle of what today is Klostergatan (Cloister street). The street occurred more south for that time being. Today, there is a plate on the wall, telling about the cloister, and another plate tells that this was the place where the first Nordic university was situated.
