American Express Discriminates Against Disabled People
I have been a card holder for decades. I always felt AE was one of the best companies out there. They are actively changing my mind about them, though.
I made a quite small purchase on-line today. I was FORCED to get a code sent to my phone. I do NOT do texting with people I love much less with any business. I contacted them and told them to remove this requirement from my account. I was told it cannot be removed.
In that case, I said, remove the phone number from the account. I was told it can only be changed, not removed. I instructed them to change it to 888-888-8888 or something similar. They dropped the chat. I am unable to change it myself without receiving a text to a NEW mobile phone number.
The federal government's civil rights office, ADA division, protects people from discrimination based on physical disability. I have filed a complaint with them.
It is appalling that AE or any other company tries to FORCE people to have mobile phone service and then FORCE them to do text messages. Just because a technology exists, it does not mean everyone has it or uses it if they do have it.
This is a very bad policy, and it will affect how I do business with AE in future. They will get far less of my business than ever before. I do not need this sort of aggravation and discrimination in my life.
For the first time ever I tried to use the AMEX insurance, after a long struggle I finally managed to get less than 10% of the item value that I lost.
Probably the worst insurance ever (Europe Assistance).
I have had American Express cards for over 40 years, in different formats. I am now retired. I took out a new American Express card to supplement my existing credit cards that included a Platinum card.
The online system is clear in opening up a new card. I thought that American Express would take my existing data (personal info and my bank details) to support the new card. I have always paid my expenditures via direct debits, and until 2 months ago, had no problems with any of my credit cards. The new card arrived and I started using it.
After a few weeks, I received a message that my new account was in default. In calling up American Express, I was informed that my account was in default as the month end bill has not been paid. I said my bank details were not requested when I opened it up, as I thought American Express would have used my existing bank details.! I paid off my card their and then . I also reset my direct debits to also include this card. Hence I thought all was good.
What I have learnt this week, is that American Express has flagged up my “shortfall” on my lack of payment to all the credit agencies. American Express did not inform me of this when I called them up, and having paid off my debt. I would have thought that American Express would also have removed my flag against the credit reference agencies having settled my shortfall.
When I called American Express about this error and the problems I was facing, I was simply told that it would take 10 working days for their office to review my situation.
I would have expected American Express to act on this immediately because it is their fault that I am in the embarrassing position: For several reasons: (1) I was not informed that my name is being highlighted with those credit agencies due to the initial payment delays and (2) it is taking so long to correct it given it was their errors from the beginning.
How can I get American Express to speed up their internal review process given the magnitude of this mistake by American Express?
Attempted to open small business checking account. Headache from the start. Third party ID verification crashed and locked me out so I had to deal with calling them next business day. Finally got an international human and they were able to push a new ID verification and complete the application. Denied. Why? My credit bureaus are frozen (as everyone's should be) and nowhere did they say they needed to be thawed. Not to mention this is a deposit account not a credit card. I've never had a bank run a credit check for anything but credit. So I could either thaw them and go through the entire process again to submit a new application, or take my business elsewhere. I took my business elsewhere.
Credit score DROPPED significantly due to their incompetence.
Purchased airfare through an airline. Purchased preferred seats at an additional price.
Airline switched the aircraft and seat configuration was not updated immediately. Unable to reach the airline at first.
Contacted AmEx to ask what options were available in the event that would have been charged for seats that I do not receive due to the aircraft change.
AmEx immediately, without my approval, initiated provisional credits equal to the price of the airfare and additional fees for seats and launched an investigation.
Airline (vendor) was ultimately contacted by me and they confirmed there was nothing to be concerned about, seat assignment was the same.
Contacted AmEx again to indicate that there was no need to issue provisional credit. AmEx reversed the provisional credits.
My account balance has CONSISTENTLY been at 0 at the end of every billing cycle, yet after they reversed the provisional credits, my account was now in a negative balance.
My account is now in a negative balance of -111.91. AmEx indicates this is a refund from the vendor.
The vendor confirmed that no refund was issued or requested.
Upon updated billing cycle, my credit score dropped 32 points.
32 points: my credit score dropped, in one day.
I contacted credit agencies and they told me they can't help me.
I contacted AmEx and they put me in touch with their credit bureau. No assistance or explanation was provided.
They connected me to "My Credit Guide" who asked for my SS# for verification, but they also claimed that they cannot see my information.
AmEx dropped the ball here, and they will not own up to it.
As an honest, loyal AmEx customer, who has been CONSISTENT in maintaining a zero balance on this card, there is no reason why my credit score should drop 32 points.
American Express: you need to get rid of these incompetent customer service agents. They dropped the ball on me and my credit score dropped. No assistance or clarification is being provided.
Expression.
My experience with American express: They clear your deposits, lock you out the next minute, and freeze your business.
"Looking back, it was a huge mistake for my company to continue using American Express since we opened this account in 2024, moving more than a quarter million dollars with them over these past two years." If I knew then what I know today, I would have used other banks for my business bank account from day one. I ran my corporation, ValTerLuX DynastY INC., with them in absolutely flawless standing, routing over $280,000 in total transaction history.
Not a single issue, not a single flag, nothing. Over that time, I safely processed more than $258,000 in real e-commerce revenue through this account from different stores. In March alone we did over $101,000, and over $121,000 in May. American Express was happy to take our processing volume and make money off us for years. Compounding this journey, I am a confirmed victim of severe personal consumer identity theft.
The credit reporting agencies have completely wrecked my consumer credit report since 2022, and despite me providing undeniable proof to them over the years, their corrupt systems have severely damaged my personal credit lines. Because these credit bureaus are corrupt, they choose to side with other corrupt companies and ignore ironclad evidence, which completely blocked me from accessing traditional business funding and forced me to rely entirely on my own hard-earned e-commerce cash flow. When I called American Express to address predatory vendors where we paid for products and services we never received, their back-office team over the phone explicitly encouraged me to go ahead and report those unauthorized transactions through them.
I literally told them that for other non-received purchases, I wouldn't even file disputes because I didn't want to overwhelm American Express with burdens, but their own representatives pushed me, authorized it, and told me to file these specific claims anyway. I showed them loyalty and restraint by holding back my other valid claims, did exactly what their own team instructed me to do, and let my hard-earned merchant revenues drop into the account like normal.
What American Express did next was completely inhumane and a clear demonstration of corruption. They waited until my company legally recuperated the money and the deposit cleared, and then the literal next minute, their automated algorithm froze the funds out of nowhere. Instead of defending their loyal customer, as their back-office team had encouraged over multiple phone calls, American Express panicked after receiving retaliatory complaints from those predatory companies, acting like a corrupt organization by shutting down my top-performing company to shield fraudsters and escape their legal duty to resolve my fraud claims.
Imagine what kind of evil company does such a thing that sides with fraudsters. The depth of their corporate corruption is completely exposed by their own conflicting documentation.
Their own Customer Care departments have issued multiple formal fraud approvals to my company today, explicitly stating word-for-word in writing:"Dear Valter Correia, We’ve completed our investigation of your claim on your American Express Checking account and wanted to share our findings. Our investigation found that the transaction(s) included in your claim was fraudulent. Based on this information, we are reimbursing you for the transaction(s) and closing this claim. To reimburse you for this transaction(s), we're issuing credits totaling $849.86 to your account. The amount(s) credited back to your account may be higher than the amount of the original transaction(s) due to any accumulated interest. Attached, you'll find a list of the transactions included in your claim. We recommend keeping a copy of this communication and any relevant documents for your records. If you have any questions, feel free to chat with us online or give us a call at the number on the back of your Debit Card and reference your claim number listed above. We’re here for you 24/7.
"They have issued these credits to our account across four separate approvals—including individual receipts for $796.69, $161.90, $849.86, and $231.00—formally acknowledging an overwhelming total of $2,039.45 in legally binding fraud reimbursements on our ledger.
They officially admit the extensive vendor fraud occurred, they close the claims, they issue thousands in manual reimbursement credits on their internal corporate ledger, and then they lock my digital portal so I cannot access or liquidate the very funds they just legally admitted belong to me! This is pure corruption—letting an established corporation's cleared business revenues and valid fraud credits sit there while freezing the account immediately for no reason at all.
You can't make this sht up....
